5 out of 5 stars A great sequel to a fun game   September 27, 2009
Lisa Shea
In Viewtiful Joe 2, you get to play either Joe or Sylvia as you take on various enemies in a side-scrolling movie screen. Fast forward or slow down time to solve the puzzles!

Tutorials help you get the hang of the game before you enter the fray. This is side scrolling mayhem. Jump, duck, kick and punch your way through enemies. Soon you'll learn about your special abilities - to slow down time or speed it up. This helps you to solve puzzles, slay enemies and have lots of fun.

In the previous game you got to play just Joe, but now you get to switch off with Sylvia whenever you want to. I'm always fond of games that let you play male or female characters.

The graphics here are deliberately cel shaded and low key. There are clipping errors with capes sliding through platforms and fuzzy old-style-movie lines and scratches at times. This is part of the character of the game. If you're going to be upset by this and wish you were playing Halo 3, then I'd suggest you play the other games in your style. This game focuses on the fun and platforming, rather than on crystal-sharp graphics. Also, of course, being made for the GameCube, they simply didn't have high quality graphics available back then.

You earn new powers as you go on, traverse a variety of landscapes, and generally wreak mayhem on the enemies around you.

The game is very family friendly, as long as you don't mind bashing cartoon enemies into puffs of smoke :)

The music is generally innocuous, typical jazzy music that bops around in the background. It doesn't stand out as being stellar, but it doesn't grate on your ears either.

Well recommended for fans of side scrolling action - the addition of slow and fast give a range of action which most side scrollers don't contain. I would suggest playing Viewtiful Joe (the original) first though, so you get caught up with the storyline and fun!

2 out of 5 stars Play the first one, not the second.   June 15, 2007

The first game was entirely new and fresh. This one on the other hand, is nowhere near new and fresh. The only thing that could've saved it was multiplayer, and hey, lucky us, there is no multiplayer.

ONE STAR. BIG WASTE O' TIME. That's what I'd like to rate this, and probably should rate this, but there were a couple decent boss fights and power-ups that prevented me from totally hating it, but still doesn't stop me from disliking it.

Get the first one for a good time, but skip the second one, because really you've already played that one when you played the first one.

5 out of 5 stars More of the Same But Easier   February 3, 2007

If you love Viewtiful Joe, then you must get this. It is definitely something a fan must have, but it is also easier than the original game, which some could consider a good thing. The bosses are easier and you are able to have as many as 9 Take 2's at a time if you can afford to buy them, making this game very simple and no challenge to those who thought the first was easy. The story is also involving and keeps fans glued to the TV as new characters are introduced and a few old characters return to make this a sweet game. The gameplay and story is fun, so what are you waiting for? Go get it! You don't have to buy the firt game before you play this, but it makes the story and gameplay all the better if you understand the plot of the previous game.

5 out of 5 stars Simply viewtiful   September 4, 2005

I'd heard good things about the Viewtiful Joe series, and as it turned out I ended up buying the sequel before playing the original. Nothing wrong with that though, as the game provides tutorials on how to use your special powers and combat moves as you play, making it instantly accessible.

Taking a cue from beat-em-up brawlers of the past, Viewtiful Joe tosses players into a 2D side-scroller with enemies to bash, bosses to destroy, and puzzles to figure out. Your girlfriend Silvia joins you this time, and you can alternate between the two characters for different moves and abilities. Slow down time, speed up, replay actions, and manipulate camera zooms for maximum damage. These unique abilities transform what would've been conventional gameplay mechanics, and make trashing the bad guys stylish and exciting.

The other notable about the Viewtiful Joe games is the cel-shaded graphics used to present the game's distinct, funky art style. There's nothing else quite like it, even compared to other cel-shaded games like Zelda and Killer 7. You get a variety of movie-themed environments (dinosaur worlds, egyptian tombs, samurai films, etc), heroes in flamboyant costumes, and bucketloads of enemies. Screenshots are one thing, but seeing this game in motion, complete with visual effects for special techniques, is something on a totally different level. The visuals are complemented by some fitting voice-acting too.

If there's a complaint, it's that the game is harder than it looks. Not only can the boss characters get annoyingly difficult at times, but the puzzles become harder to figure out as you advance. It's usually a matter of figuring out what powers/combination of powers to use and where, but the game is sometimes uncompromising in its solutions. Pressing replay before jumping into a zoom stomp is not the same as pressing it while you're in mid-air. It's a subtle difference, but one gamers might not notice and will cause a bit of frustration. While you may stop playing when the puzzles get too hard, there's nothing that'll make you put the game aside for good, and there's usually a nice sense of accomplishment when you do figure things out.

Viewtiful Joe 2 is an innovative twist on an old genre, and is one of Capcom's new breakout franchises that unfortunately has been undersold. You can't go wrong adding this to your gaming library.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, but the cut scenes suck!   April 17, 2005

This game is almost completely re-used/recycled from the first version. WARNING you need to fight fire leo's twin!!! if you can beat him you can beat Frost tiger easily! The gameplay is fun, but the cut scenes are for 3-year-olds. dont let that
stop you from buying it.BUT ONLY BUY IF YOU BEAT THE 1'ST ONE!!!
