Product Description
Super Mario Sunshine takes Mario and Peach to beautiful Sunshine Island, for a much-needed vacation -- until a graffiti artist dressed like Mario goes around vandalizing the place!

Amazon.co.uk Review
Six years. Six long years we've had to wait for a new Mario game, and finally it's here. And even considering the ridiculously unfair expectations, Super Mario Sunshine is almost entirely as good as you'd hope and expect.

The premise of the game is that Mario's tropical holiday is ruined when he's stitched up by an evil look-alike for daubing graffiti all over the island. Rather conveniently, there's a water pump waiting for him to use, which not only washes away the mess but also doubles as a handy jet pack. The jet pack aspect means that whenever you fall off something you have the chance to immediately recover. This built-in safety net means the game can afford to be far more ambitious in its level design than ever before, with massive levels filled with trampolines, tightropes, water-powered windmills, huge coral reefs, and mountains and mountains of platforms.

The whole thing looks amazing, too, with the most realistic water ever seen in a video game, and a near-infinite draw distance. On top of all this are rideable, fruit-juice-spewing Yoshis, extra water nozzles, super-hardcore platform levels where Shadow Mario nicks your jet pack, and goop-generating bosses who seem to live to make Princess Peach's laundry a nightmare.

After the sweet but rather short pleasures of Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin, you need have no fear that Mario Sunshine is of a similarly brief nature. There are a total of 120 shines to collect--the same number of stars as in Super Mario 64--and the game world is at least as large and far more interactive. This is without question the best game on the GameCube yet. That may be no more than you'd expect from a Mario game, but it's certainly more than most of us mere mortals deserve. --David Jenkins

4 out of 5 stars Another solid Mario game   August 7, 2010
Scott Williams (new buffalo, MI United States)
Even though I've had Mario Galaxy for a while now, I have held off on playing it because I had yet to play Super Mario Sunshine. Of course, the stories in either are not connected in anyway, but it was a matter of principle. I wanted to make note of how much Nintendo had advanced the Mario formula and I had always heard that Sunshine was a worthy Mario entry.

I'm pleased to write that what I heard was true. Though it seemed Sunshine was overlooked due to the new water pack element, it still deserves to be played by any Mario fan. If you are looking for a fun and challenging experience, Mario Sunshine is the game for you.

The story is interesting enough to keep you playing. Mario, Peach and some Toads go off to a tropical island for a relaxing vacation. Of course, this is interrupted when Mario get's arrested and has to do community service for vandalizing property. Or so it seems. It turns out to be an impostor who is obsessed with framing Mario. I won't spoil any other details, but this is the first traditional Mario game that tried to have a story, at least.

The basis of the game is to clean up polluted areas with the water pack you are given. Upon successful cleaning, you receive a star sprite which is needed to restore the light to the island. The water pack is fun to use and it adds to the jumping gameplay. You can use to to hover across long gaps, or, if you find the right nozzle, you can rocket jump into the sky. There is also a jet nozzle for racing across the water and your standard nozzle allows you to spray objects with a stream of water. The water pack does a great job of complimenting the otherwise solid gameplay.

The challenge comes in trying to collect all 120 star sprites. Of course, you can complete the game with around 75, I believe. But getting those 75 was is no walk in the park. There are certain levels that will really test your platform jumping skills and patience. I was close to breaking a controller in frustration at a few of these, but as they have become rather expensive over the years, I just chose to punch a pillow instead. As a fair warning, the levels I'm referring to are the ones in which you temporarily lose your water pack. These levels will strike a cord with NES Mario fans as the difficult resembles those days. Even the music is a nod to Mario's beginnings. Good luck with those!

Overall, Sunshine is a another great entry into the long running Mario franchise. It has a lot of stars to collect, challenging segments and most of all, it's just fun to spend time with the world's most famous plumber.

3 out of 5 stars Cd didn't play well in system.   July 19, 2010

CD didn't play in system very well. Kept getting error, and having to restart, unable to enjoy.
Scratches kept system from reading disc, so I had to go purchase another at local store.

1 out of 5 stars UGH!!!   June 11, 2010

This game has pretty much NO potential what so ever. The controls are alright, but the game play and story is very crappy. And for the most part, you CANNOT make a 3d Mario game without punching or kicking. And half of the levels are either way, way, way, to easy. Or they insanely difficult. this was a bit of a let down for the most part because, I spent over $50 on it! So pretty much what I'm goin for is don't buy this game. And if you want a good 3d Mario game either get Super Mario 64, or Super Mario Galaxy. Oh and also if you want a good GAMECUBE game get Wario world. well that is all I have to say about this game. Also all you adventure game seekers out there don't buy this game. Well I better get goin I gotta write a review on Crash Of The Titans. See ya!

4 out of 5 stars My son was in heaven   May 14, 2010

I didn't even know this game existed until my autistic son was begging me to get it for him. His obsession for the last two years has been Mario Bros. This game has kept him engaged and focused when usually he's all over the place. He loves to figure out what's next and would play it for hours if we let him. If you have a special needs child that does well with video games, I would recommend this one.
